Some Reviews of DOWNTOWN BUSINESS RECRUITMENT

"David Milder has produced a work such that no Downtown activist will any longer have the excuse that the subject is muddy, confusing, impenetrable; here is the comprehensive source. From costs to cautions, from messages to media, Milder lays out the practical steps to enable Business Improvement Districts and others to fill commercial space with winning tenants. Should be on the desk of every self styled economic development professional."

“Excellent job! Comprehensive, thorough and chock full of good examples and insights. This should be required reading for both ‘newbies’ and ‘seasoned veterans’ alike.”

“It’s great. I wish this book had existed when I went to manage the Red Bank River Center. I would have slept with it under my pillow and referred to it constantly. And not just for recruitment. I think there are a lot of insights into how to manage a downtown organization overall. The chapter on networking pretty much covers how to survive in this field.”

Downloading Advice

The file for the complete book is relatively large, 2.63 MB. If you have a broadband Internet connection, this should pose no downloading problem. However, for those with dial-up Internet connections, downloading probably will be easier and less prone to error if they download each chapter separately.

If your computer does not have a lot of memory (e.g., less than 512 MB of RAM), it also may be best to download and read the book chapter by chapter.

Some readers may be uncertain about their interest in this book. They, too, are welcome to download the book by chapters -- as warranted by their interest.

Printing Advice

As mentioned above, the files for the book are relatively large. The book has 116 pages. Some of the pages have graphics that require a fair amount of memory in both the computer and the printer. Chapter III will be the most likely to pose challenges because it has the most pages and the most illustrations. The others should be relatively easy to print. To help avoid printing problems:

  1. Use a computer with at least 512 MB of memory and adequate empty space on its hard drive
  2. Use a printer that has a fair amount of on-board memory installed. For example, no printing problems were encountered on an HP DeskJet 830c that came with 2 MB of built-in RAM when the recommendations presented here were followed. More printer memory assures fewer problems and quicker printing
  3. Download and print from the chapter files
  4. Only print about 10 to 15 pages at a time
  5. Print by themselves the pages with a lot of color graphics (e.g., the cover and pages 44, 66, 67, 68 and 85). In most instances, this tactic will greatly facilitate the printing of Chapter III. Please note: the aforementioned page numbers refer to those in the bottom right hand corner of each page -- not the pagination created by Acrobat, which is at the center of the bottom of the Acrobat screen window.
